Vision of Grove

Empowering Mangrove Conservation Through Geospatial Technology

Discover how to track mangrove loss and support coastal communities after cyclones. The app is designed to aid local governments and disaster relief programs in reforestation areas that need it the most.

Vision of Grove uses cutting-edge machine learning of geospatial data to predict community vulnerability in cyclone-prone regions, where mangrove loss intensifies storm impacts. VOG provides real-time insights through its Earth Engine App, empowering governments, NGOs, and civilians to implement targeted defense measures.

Cause

The Sundarbans of South Asia is home to the world’s largest mangrove forest and plays a vital role in protecting coastal communities from the devastating effects of cyclones. However, the region has lost nearly 25% of its mangrove cover in the past 30 years, primarily due to soil erosion, population pressure, and the increasing intensity of storms fueled by climate change. Mangroves not only shield the coastline but also support the livelihoods of millions, with 80% of the local population relying on mangrove-related activities for income. Without these natural defenses, over 15 million people globally would face greater risks of flooding each year. Vision of Grove was created to address this growing threat by providing targeted insights using geospatial technology and mahine learning tools that help allocate resources for effective mangrove reforestation. The app empowers decision-makers to prioritize areas that need protection the most, safeguarding both ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
